| Clinical Utility: Androstenedione plays a role in the development of secondary sexual characteristics, libido, and overall hormonal balance. It is a steroid hormone that is produced in the adrenal glands, ovaries, and testes and it is a precursor to testosterone and estrone. Elevated levels of androstenedione can be associated with conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and certain types of adrenal tumors. Low levels may be seen in conditions such as adrenal insufficiency or hypopituitarism. | |
