PROTHROMBIN TIME (PT) WITH INR | |
|---|---|
| Test Code:280 | Specimen Collection:Plasma |
| Component:
| Method: Clotting, Chromogenic, Immunoturbidimetric, Aggregometry |
| Collection Notes:Draw to the proper fill level (do not overfill or underfill) because the correct ratio of blood to citrate is critical (9:1). Mix by gentle inversion 5-6 times. Hemolyzed or clotted specimens are not acceptable. Centrifuge and physically separate the plasma using a plastic transfer pipette into a separate plastic transfer tube. Freeze and transport frozen on dry ice. **1 Aliquot tube needed per frozen test (Ex. PT & PTT ordered together = 2mL plasma citrate into two aliquot tubes (1mL in each tube)** | |
| Clinical Utility:The measurement of PT is the method of choice for monitoring anticoagulant therapy with vitamin K antagonists (warfarin-type oral anticoagulant drugs, e.g., Coumadin), especially for preventing post-operative thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, and to screen for coagulation factor deficiency in hemorrhagic diseases. | |
