A survey study published in the National Library of Medicine, conducted among 40,443 US adults, aimed to provide nationally representative estimates of the prevalence, severity, and factors associated with adult food allergies in the United States. The findings revealed that an estimated 10.8% of US adults were food allergic at the time of the survey, whereas nearly 19% believed they had a food allergy. Notably, almost half of the food-allergic adults developed allergies in adulthood, and 38% reported at least one food allergy–related emergency department visit in their lifetime. The most common allergies were shellfish, milk, peanuts, tree nuts, and finfish.
The study highlights the significance of adult-onset food allergies, shedding light on their severity, which can be potentially life-threatening. Despite the considerable impact of food allergies on health and quality of life, little was previously known about the prevalence and healthcare utilization related to this condition among US adults.
