Fasting-Mimicking Diet May Help Reduce Biological Aging

  • April 15, 2024

A recent study published in Nature Communications suggests that a fasting-like diet, known as the Fasting-Mimicking Diet (FMD), may hold promise in reversing biological aging by approximately 2.5 years. Led by USC Leonard Davis School Professor Valter Longo, the study explored the effects of the FMD on biomarkers associated with aging, insulin resistance, liver fat, and inflammation. Participants followed a regimen of five days on the FMD, consuming formulated food with controlled macronutrient levels, followed by 25 days of regular eating for three to four monthly cycles. Results indicated notable improvements in insulin resistance, HbA1c levels, fasting glucose, abdominal and liver fat, and immune system markers associated with inflammation. Moreover, participants experienced a reduction in biological aging markers by an average of 2.5 years. The FMD, however, is not suitable for everyone, particularly pregnant individuals and older adults, due to their specific nutritional needs and metabolic considerations.

The FMD, designed by Professor Longo, involves a high intake of unsaturated fats and low levels of protein, carbohydrates, and calories during the fasting period. It is formulated to mimic the physiological effects of fasting while providing essential nutrients to support metabolic function. While the clinical consensus is generally positive regarding the safety of the FMD, further research is warranted to elucidate its long-term effects and optimal application in various populations. Professor Longo emphasized the need for continued clinical trials to explore the FMD’s potential in disease prevention and treatment, particularly for conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. Physicians are encouraged to consider incorporating the FMD into their toolkit for patient care, pending additional evidence-based guidelines and individualized assessment of patient suitability. As the field of nutritional science evolves, the FMD presents an intriguing avenue for exploring the intersection of diet, aging, and disease prevention.
